What Is Fascism?

I believe that it is almost futile to speak of any authority or group as 'fascist' if it existed before the Enlightenment. Fascism is a dark shadow that became apparent from the shining emergence of individualism and reason in 18th Century Europe.

In this new age of liberty and science, whereat the state should be at the whim of the people, and liberal notions of distribution and balance of power are so prevalent; a Fascist state is the epitome of retrogression.

To define Fascism in this modern era, I turn to Robert Paxton's excellent definitions:

- a sense of overwhelming crisis beyond the reach of any traditional solutions;

- the primacy of the group, toward which one has duties superior to every right, whether individual or universal, and the subordination of the individual to it;

- the belief that one’s group is a victim, a sentiment that justifies any action, without legal or moral limits, against its enemies, both internal and external;

- dread of the group’s decline under the corrosive effects of individualistic liberalism, class conflict, and alien influences;

- the need for closer integration of a purer community, by consent if possible, or by exclusionary violence if necessary;

- the need for authority by natural chiefs (always male), culminating in a national chieftain who alone is capable of incarnating the group’s historical destiny;

- the superiority of the leader’s instincts over abstract and universal reason;

- the beauty of violence and efficacy of will, when they are devoted to the group’s success.

Mugabe's £4m getaway.

Robert Mugabe has bought a £4m house in Hong Kong it has emerged. Mugabe's legacy is inflation at 231,000,000%, unemployment at 94% and 3,467 people have died in recent months from cholera. Zimbabwe was once the most bountiful country in the world for food exports; now it lies in ruins, left to rot by its cruel destroyer.
